Corpses of the two remaining flood victims of the Oko Erin bridge collapse in the Ilorin West local government area of Kwara state earlier declared missing since Saturday night have been recovered.
The two flood victims, identified as
Chuben Orwabo and Chibike Orwabo, said to be the children of the first victim, were found by men of the state fire service inside Asa River, at the back of the Kasmag Motors, Unity road, Ilorin on Tuesday evening.
It is recalled that corpse of Mr. Okechukwu Orwabo, father of the children, had been found at CocaCola area of the metropolis on Sunday afternoon.
The public relations officer of the state fire service, Hassan Adekunle, said that corpses of the flood victims had been handed over to members of their family.
According to the Kwara state fire service, it was summoned to a rescue operation at Oko Erin area last Saturday at about 10:30 pm, “involving a vehicle with five people inside the car while the bridge has been submerged by the torrent flowing over the bridge due to the downpour.
“One of the passengers alighted from the vehicle to check the depth of the torrent, but unfortunately suddenly the bridge collapsed and got him sunk. Relatively the same time two passengers alighted from the vehicle and they got sunk too”.
Meanwhile, the Kwara state government has commiserated with the families of the flood victims following the collapse of the embankment of Oko-Erin bridge in Ilorin, the state capital.
The Deputy Governor, Mr Kayode Alabi, mourned the victims while inspecting the affected bridge in company of the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Adisa Logun.
Mr Alabi described the accident as disheartening as any loss of life is tragic and traumatic.
He urged the people to desist from dumping refuse in drainages or building on waterways to prevent flooding or erosion of bridges.
He sympathised with the affected families and urged the rescue team to double efforts to locate the missing persons.
