The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, has declared that PDP will sweep the 2023 general elections, from the top, down.
He made the declaration in Gboko, the traditional headquarters of the Tiv Nation, when addressing thousands of the party supporters who visited him at his residence in Gboko to celebrate Christmas festival with him.
He noted that the party, under his leadership, was being rebuilt and repositioned as a cohesive force that will sweep the 2023 general elections, from the top, down.
He added: “To this end, we will be intensifying our membership drive in the new year; we will be touring the states to meet stakeholders and connect with the party faithful; we will be resolving disputes and building consensuses so that we go into 2023 as a united party that is driven by a common goal.”
According to him, “We remember your love for the PDP as a political party. You have been been consistent since 1999. And that loyalty was most eloquently demonstrated in 2019 when you rewarded the PDP with three senatorial victories
“Benue has 11 Federal Constituency seats – you gave PDP seven; you gave APGA two; and left both the Labour Party and the APC to share one each. And out of the 30 Assembly seats, you gave the PDP 23! And PDP appreciates your loyalty greatly.”
“But with the crowds here and the steady defections of APC chieftains into the PDP in recent times, Benue people are set to beat their 2019 record by overwhelmingly giving our party a glut of votes, Come 2023.”
Ayu, however, urged PDP members in Benue state and elsewhere to eschew violence and shun provocations from rival parties, saying “violence is not in our character.”
“The historic burden upon us is to rebuild the party and rescue our nation. And both require focus. When you have such a historic burden, you cannot afford petty distractions,” he concluded.
In his remarks, Gov. Samuel Ortom, lauded the decision of the PDP national chairman to celebrate the Christmas Holiday with his people, and equally described Ayu as “someone who has what it takes to rescue and rebuild the country from misrule by the All Progressives Congress.”
Also speaking at the event, former Speaker Pro-Tempore, Rt. Hon. Terngu Tsegba, saluted Ayu’s vision of rebuilding the party and rescuing the nation, advising that if he keeps his promise of impartiality, “the people’s will will to prevail at the primaries, and this will engender massive returns for the PDP in the succeeding elections.”
Recall that in the 2019 general elections, the PDP swept the entire Benue state, winning the governorship, the three senatorial seats, seven House of Representatives seats and 23 State Assembly slots.
