The Nigeria Labour Congress and other affiliate unions in education sector in Kogi State, have said that
re-opening of schools in Kogi state need to be done with due deligence and utmost precaution to prevent the spread of coronavirus that had ravaged the world including Nigeria.
The union also called called on the to provide adequate infrastructural needs of schools to ensure effective enforcement of NCDC protocols and guidelines before any school in the state can be re-open for activities.
The call was contained in a communique issued at the end of the joint meeting between the NLC , NASU, ASSUP, ASSUS , COEASU and other affiliate unions in education sector held in Lokoja.
The communique which was signed by the leadership of the unions averred that re-opening of schools in Kogi state need to be done with due deligence and utmost precaution to prevent the spread of coronavirus that had ravaged the world including Nigeria.
“It is apparent and very obvious that some primary, secondary and tertiary institutions are over crowded as a result of population and if tangeable measures are not taken before schools resume it will definitely pave ways for the spread of coronavirus to unimagenable proportion.
“That is why the congress unanimously resolved at the end of our meeting today that government should do the needful to avoid unforeseen circumstances in Kogi state as a result of convid-19 pandermic” the communique said.
The communique further urged the government to make provision for insurance scheme and parlliatives for staff of institution of higher learning who may be affected by the dreaded virus in the course of discharging his or her duties.
“Employers should also implement provision for excess load work allowance as it is contained in the scheme of service where it is applicable for lecturers and non teaching staff” the communique advised
The unions also urged the state government to bring all stakeholders in primary schools , secondary Schools and tertiary institutions comprises of unions such as NUT, Parent Teacher’s Association, former Vice Chancellors , Provosts , Rectors among others to deliberate on the way forward toward re-opening of schools.
