The former Chairman of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Kogi State Chapter, Bishop John Ibenu, has called on the Federal Government to adopt an economic model similar to Germany’s, where the private sector plays the dominant role in driving economic growth and job creation.
Bishop Ibenu, founder and Overseer of Chapel of Freedom International, Lokoja, made the call on Sunday while addressing journalists at the end of activities marking the 34th anniversary of Chapel of Freedom International at the church’s headquarters in Lokoja.
According to the cleric, Germany’s economy thrives because it is largely driven by private enterprises, with only a small percentage of the workforce employed by the government.
He explained that the German government employs about eight percent of its working population, while private companies, businesses and entrepreneurs provide the bulk of employment and contribute significantly to the country’s economic development.
The bishop lamented that many Nigerians still depend heavily on government employment despite the limited opportunities available, urging citizens to embrace entrepreneurship and productive ventures instead of waiting for government patronage.
Reflecting on the church’s 34-year journey, Bishop Ibenu attributed its growth and success to God’s faithfulness, saying consistency, resilience and unwavering faith have sustained the ministry over the past three decades.
The former Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Kogi State described the week-long anniversary celebration as impactful, noting that participants who underwent various trainings would serve as change agents in society.
He disclosed that members of Chapel of Freedom International would be mobilised to participate actively in productive economic activities across Kogi State and the country, with the aim of improving livelihoods and promoting self-reliance.
Bishop Ibenu urged Nigerians to develop productive skills and embrace enterprise rather than focusing solely on white-collar jobs or seeking greener pastures abroad.
He also commended the Kogi State Government for providing a conducive environment for religious organisations to operate, praising Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo for his ongoing infrastructure development projects, particularly the construction of the state airport.
The cleric reaffirmed the commitment of religious leaders to continue partnering with the state government in advancing the overall development of Kogi State and Nigeria.
