Dr. Segun Nezar Keyi, a respected medical practitioner, humanitarian and pioneer healthcare provider, has been laid to rest following a funeral service at the Cathedral of St. Peter, Ogori, in the Diocese of Ogori-Magongo, Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion). He passed away at the age of 72.

The funeral service was officiated by the Sub-Dean of the Cathedral, Ven. Paul Usman, who preached from Luke 16 on the theme, “You in Your Lifetime.”

He urged Christians to dedicate their lives to the service of God and humanity, warning against the abuse of wealth, influence and authority.

The cleric described the late Dr. Keyi as a man whose life was defined by compassion, integrity and selfless service, noting that his positive impact would remain a lasting legacy.

He reminded the congregation that every individual would one day give an account of their earthly deeds, stressing that salvation must be embraced while there is still opportunity.

Paying an emotional tribute, the widow, Mrs. Joan Keyi, described her late husband as a devoted family man, faithful Christian and compassionate humanitarian whose generosity touched countless lives.

She said his unwavering love, wisdom and commitment to the well-being of others would remain unforgettable, adding that his legacy would continue to inspire generations.

His daughter, Mrs. Lovelyn Unini Mosugu, also celebrated her father as a dependable mentor, protector and personal medical adviser who always placed his family first. She thanked him for instilling values of kindness, generosity and good character, describing him as a remarkable man whose influence would never fade.

His junior brother, Dr. Matthew Keyi while speaking with Newsmen described his late brother as a fufile man adding that the family will never forget him.

He said his late brother was the first medical doctor to established Lafia Hospital in Abaji, Abuja.

Born on July 7, 1954, in Ogori, Kogi State, Dr. Keyi attended St. Peter’s Primary School, Ogori, before proceeding to Ochaja Secondary School. He later studied Medicine at the University of Ibadan/University College Hospital, Ibadan, where he earned his MBBS degree.

Dr. Keyi made history by establishing Lafia Hospital in Abaji, Abuja—the first hospital in the area. Popularly known as “Baban Likita” by residents, he became widely respected for providing quality and accessible healthcare, particularly to underserved rural communities.

Throughout his medical career, he was an active member of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), the Guild of Medical Directors, and the Association of General and Private Medical Practitioners of Nigeria. Colleagues remembered him as a man of integrity who combined professional excellence with deep reverence for God.

He is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, siblings and numerous mentees, friends and patients whose lives were positively transformed through his decades of dedicated service.

Family members, friends and members of the Ogori community described his passing as a great loss, while celebrating a life devoted to humanity, compassion and excellence in medical practice.
