The military President of Guinea Conakry, Colonel Mamady Doumbouya has reportedly forgiven the National team after dropping out of the ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon against the earlier agreement he had with them before they took off. However, the president didn’t let them go just like that.
It would be remembered that, before the departure of the National Elephants to Cameroon, the president held a tight meeting with the team and gave them his final words. Colonel Doumbouya told them to win or refund the state funds.
Doumbouya was just done removing a whole President from power, so many believed he would actually enforce the directive.
When the team failed to qualify for the round of 16 with a 2-1 defeat to Zimbabwe at Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo, many post were made mockingly advising the players, especially those who play their club footballs abroad to just travel from Cameroon without returning to Guinea.
However, upon return the situation as expected was a bit easier. According to reports, Doumbouya congratulated the team for their performance. He also told them that, the earlier tough statement was just to push them to strive harder. However, the President said the funds allocated to the team should be partially refunded.
According to him, the money given to the team covered Quarterfinals, Semi-final and final games and that must be returned to the state coffers as soon as possible.
