The Academic Staff Union of Universities have stated that the rumours spreading about the union calling off its strike action is only ‘presumptive’.

This statement was made known by the ASUU, UNILAG chapter chairman, Doctor Dere Ashiru  in a video conference with Sunrise TV which was broadcasted by Channels TV at about 9:28AM today.

When asked when the official statement will be made about calking off the ongoing strike, the charmain ASUU UNILAG chapter, Dr. Dere Ashiru replied “well, talking about calling off the strike may be presumptive at the moment. Government met with our union yesterday and tried to dot the ‘I’s and cross the ‘T’s the honourable minister of employment and our leadership will have to come back to our members. So between today, Monday and Wednesday, branch congresses will meet again to consider the report in totality the engagement of our union with government and then branches will then take decisions at that level which the respective chairmen will now take to the national council meeting…”

He further explained that it is only after the branches have decided and the national ASUU council is persuaded enough that they will now decide whether to suspend the strike or continue on the industrial action.

Note that the union had met with the federal government on the Friday 27th November 2020 to discuss on settling various matters contributing to the strike.

The government had offered to increase the Earned Allowances and fund for revitalization of schools from 65billion to 70billion naira.

The federal government had also in their last week meeting with ASUU agreed to temporarily exempt ASUU from the Integrated Payroll and Personal Information System (IPPIS) and put them on Government Integrated Financial and Management Information System (GIFMIS) pending the testing and approval of ASUU’s University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS).
