The administration of Ahmed Usman Ododo has, in less than two years, altered the rhythm of life across Kogi State. From the riverine communities of Ibaji to the rocky settlements of Okene and the busy streets of Lokoja, the impact of his government is increasingly measured not only in projects and statistics, but in the everyday experiences of ordinary people.

When Ododo assumed office in January 2024, he inherited a state grappling with insecurity, poor infrastructure, inadequate healthcare, unemployment and growing economic pressure. His administration responded with what it described as a “people-centred” agenda, placing emphasis on roads, security, education, healthcare, agriculture and workers’ welfare.

For many residents, the most visible sign of change has been in infrastructure. In Lokoja, long-neglected roads have been reconstructed, while new streetlights have transformed movement at night. Major projects such as the Zone 8–Barracks–Zango road and the Zone 8–Crusher road have improved transportation within the state capital and opened access to surrounding communities.

These projects have reduced travel time, boosted commerce and given residents a renewed sense of government presence.

For traders and transporters, better roads have translated into better business. Farmers can now move produce from rural areas to markets with less difficulty, while commuters spend less time navigating damaged roads.

In many communities, residents say the difference is not merely physical; it has restored confidence that government can deliver tangible development.
Security has also emerged as one of the defining areas of the Ododo administration. Kogi, like many states in Nigeria, has struggled with kidnapping, armed robbery and attacks on rural communities.

In response, the government strengthened collaboration with security agencies and introduced local security measures, including the recruitment of hunters and vigilantes across the 21 local government areas.

The decision to recruit fifty hunters in each local government area and later integrate over a thousand local security operatives has increased surveillance in rural communities and along major highways.

Residents in areas previously troubled by banditry now report greater freedom of movement, while traders and farmers feel safer returning to their businesses and farms. The rescue of abducted students of Confluence University of Science and Technology became one of the administration’s most symbolic achievements, reinforcing public confidence in the government’s commitment to security.

Beyond security and roads, the Ododo government has placed unusual emphasis on healthcare, especially in rural areas. In many villages across Kogi, access to medical care was once limited to poorly equipped clinics or long journeys to urban hospitals. The administration’s rehabilitation of more than 100 primary healthcare centres has begun to change that reality.

Across the state, many of the once-neglected health centres now have new buildings, improved equipment and better staffing. Pregnant women, nursing mothers and elderly residents no longer travel long distances for basic medical attention.

In some local government areas, communities that had not seen meaningful investment in healthcare for years now have functioning clinics operating around the clock. The government has approved billions of naira for the rehabilitation of primary health centres, with the goal of ensuring that each local government area has at least three fully functional facilities.

For parents, perhaps no policy has had a more immediate impact than the administration’s intervention in education. At a time when many families struggle to keep their children in school, the government approved ₦600 million for the payment of WAEC fees for more than 18,000 students in public secondary schools. It also released over ₦522 million for other examinations, including JAMB and Common Entrance.

This intervention has lifted a major burden from parents, especially in low-income households. In rural communities where children often drop out because families cannot afford examination fees, the policy has helped keep thousands in school. Teachers and parents say the programme has reduced the number of out-of-school children and renewed hope among students who once believed their dreams would end because of poverty.

The administration’s impact is also being felt among workers and pensioners. At a time when inflation and rising living costs have squeezed household incomes, the Ododo government approved a ₦72,500 minimum wage for workers in the state, above the national benchmark of ₦70,000. Pensioners, many of whom had endured years of hardship, were also granted a harmonisation allowance.

For civil servants, the new wage has provided some relief in meeting the cost of transportation, food and school fees. Pensioners, especially elderly retirees in rural areas, say the allowance has restored dignity and offered support after years of neglect. In a state where public workers form a large segment of the economy, improved welfare has had a ripple effect on local markets and household spending.

Agriculture, the backbone of the Kogi economy, has equally received attention. The state’s fertile land has long sustained farming communities, but many farmers have struggled with insecurity, poor roads and limited access to markets. With improved rural roads and enhanced security, more farmers are returning to their farms. Government support for agriculture and plans to stimulate trade are helping to strengthen the local economy and create opportunities for young people.

Women and youths, who constitute a significant part of Kogi’s population, are increasingly becoming the focus of government programmes. Empowerment schemes, skills training and support for small businesses are gradually creating opportunities in communities where unemployment once drove frustration and migration. Although challenges remain, the administration’s policies have offered many young people a sense of inclusion and possibility.

Yet, despite these achievements, many Kogites believe there is still much to be done. Rural poverty remains high, unemployment persists and some communities still lack access to clean water and electricity. Critics also argue that the administration must ensure that development is spread evenly across the three senatorial districts.

Even so, the prevailing mood in many parts of the state is that of cautious optimism. For many people, the Ododo administration represents a government that has, at least, begun to address their daily struggles in visible ways.
In the end, the impact of Governor Ododo’s administration may not be measured solely by kilometres of roads built or the number of projects commissioned.

Its true significance lies in the lives of the people: the mother who can now access a nearby clinic, the student whose examination fees were paid, the farmer who can return safely to his field, and the worker whose salary now stretches a little further.

For those people, government is no longer an abstract institution in Lokoja. Under Ododo, it is beginning to feel closer to home.
