The Kogi NGOs Network (KONGONET), the umbrella body of civil society organizations in Kogi State, has expresses concern over crisis involving persons with disabilities in Kogi State.

The KONGONET Chairperson, Hamza Aliyu in a statement issued on Thursday notes with deep concern the unfolding crisis between the Association of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) and The Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH) in the state over allegations of marginalization in employment and non-compliance with disability inclusion laws.

“As a civil society platform committed to promoting inclusion, equity, and justice, KONGONET is displeased with the manner in which this matter has been handled, particularly the apparent disregard for established disability rights frameworks.

“The Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018, enacted by the Federal Government of Nigeria, guarantees equal opportunity and prohibits discrimination in employment, education, health and access to public services for PWDs. Similarly, the Kogi State Disability Rights Law, enacted in alignment with the national legislation, affirms the right of PWDs to fair representation and inclusion in state institutions. The continued neglect of these provisions undermines both the dignity of citizens and the credibility of governance processes.

The body while acknowledging the frustration of PWDs over perceived marginalization, strongly emphasizes that citizens must exercise their grievances within the bounds of law and civility. Actions that restrict the freedom of movement of others or that infringe on the rights of fellow citizens are not consistent with democratic values.

The body therefore call on the Kogi State Government to reaffirm its commitment to the implementation of both the National Disability Act (2018) and the Kogi State Disability Rights Law and also establish a clear and inclusive framework for the recruitment and engagement of PWDs in line with statutory provisions.

His words, “Strengthen platforms for sustained engagement between government institutions and disability advocacy groups to forestall future conflicts.

The body stressed that peaceful dialogue, mutual respect, and respect for the rule of law remain the cornerstones of resolving this crisis as he urge all stakeholders, particularly the leadership of the PWD community and state authorities, to embrace mediation and uphold the principles of inclusivity and justice enshrined in our laws.
