Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, has congratulated Nigerians on the occasion of the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, calling on citizens to remain committed to protecting and strengthening the nation’s democratic institutions.

In a Democracy Day message issued on June 12, the governor described the occasion as an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices of past heroes and the enduring democratic ideals that continue to shape Nigeria’s development.

Ododo noted that democracy remains the most credible system through which citizens exercise their sovereign will, elect leaders, and hold governments accountable.

According to him, despite various challenges confronting the country, democracy has continued to provide a framework for peace, development, participation, and the protection of fundamental rights and freedoms.

Quoting former American President Abraham Lincoln, the governor said democracy is “government of the people, by the people, for the people,” stressing that its strength lies not only in the election of leaders but also in the active participation of citizens in national affairs.

He urged Nigerians to preserve the gains achieved through years of struggle and sacrifice by pro-democracy activists, warning against actions capable of undermining democratic institutions.

“We must reject actions capable of weakening our democracy and instead strengthen the values of tolerance, dialogue, unity, and responsible citizenship,” he said.

The governor also emphasized the importance of good governance in national development, citing former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan’s position that effective governance is essential for poverty reduction and sustainable development.

Ododo commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his contributions to Nigeria’s democratic journey, describing him as one of the nation’s foremost champions of democracy who stood firm during critical periods in the country’s political evolution.

He said Tinubu’s emergence as President reflects the rewards of commitment to democratic ideals and service to the people.

The governor further called on Nigerians to continue supporting and praying for the country and its leaders, noting that nation-building requires collective effort, patriotism, and positive contributions from all citizens.

Paying tribute to the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, Ododo described him as a pillar of Nigeria’s democratic consciousness whose sacrifices laid the foundation for the country’s modern democracy.

According to the governor, Abiola chose to fight for the democratic rights of Nigerians despite having the wealth and influence to pursue personal interests, a decision that continues to inspire generations.

On behalf of the government and people of Kogi State, Ododo wished Nigerians a memorable Democracy Day celebration and urged them to remain united in building a nation where democracy delivers hope, justice, opportunity, and prosperity for all.
