The social media has been awash lately about the brewing crisis in the apex social-political group of Okun people, The Okun Development Association, ODA
A group of prominent Okun people who goes by name Okun Leaders forum has accused the Mokikan led National Executive of ODA of ploy to amend the constitution to extend their tenure beyond the October 2020 mandate that was given to them, a development that has generated tension and acrimony among the stakeholders of ODA.
Barrister Mokikan no doubt has performed beyond average as ODA president. There also seems to be some form of accountability in the running of the affairs of the association all thanks to the social media age that has brought the association closer to the people unlike what we had in the past. This has also evoked more stakeholders interest in the association as they are not willing to extend the tenure of the current executive beyond the original mandate.
The current president of ODA has been receiving accolades for his achievements but all seems to be fading away now because of the alleged ploy to extend his tenure, the popularity of Mr Mokikan has dwindled ever since the story of his tenure elongation filtered into the air. As it is, he stand to loose everything he has achieved in ODA if he insists on staying in office beyond 20th of October.
I also reliably gathered that some community association leadership are already meeting to discuss the possibility of breaking away from ODA if Mokikan remain in office beyond 20th October. Their worry is premised on the fact that Mr Mokikan is yet to put in place machineries that will ensure a successful handing over after his tenure might have expired. Some stakeholders in Ijumu are also said to be reaching out to some of the financial of the association to put pressure on Mr Mokikan to step aside when his tenure expires as it is the turn of Ijumu to produce another president.
My advice to Barrister Mokikan is for him to maintain his good name and integrity and not to do things that will destroy his many years of service. If ODA collapse because of him, history will record it against him and generation of Okun Okun descend will make reference to him. He has the opportunity to keep his name in the good book of ODA by putting in place mechanism that will ensure a peaceful transition at the end of his tenure. It is now a clear choice if Mokikan want to remain a hero of Okun people or a villain.
