Wife of a late former Governor of Oyo State, Chief (Mrs.) Oluwakemi Alao-Akala, has called for improved security around schools across Nigeria, following the successful rescue of pupils and teachers abducted in the Ogboarea of Oyo State, describing their release as a major relief for their families and the entire country.

The victims, who were kidnapped during an attack on three schools in Oriire Local Government Area on May 15, 2026, regained their freedom after spending nearly two months in captivity following a highly coordinated operation involving federal and state security agencies.

Reacting to the development, Mrs Alao-Akala commended the Federal Government, Governor Seyi Makinde and security operatives for securing the release of the abductees.

“I commend the Federal Government, Governor Seyi Makinde and all security agencies for their efforts in ensuring the safe rescue of the abducted pupils and teachers. Their return has brought hope and relief to their families and every well-meaning Nigerian,” she said.

She also expressed sympathy to the families of those who lost their lives during the tragic incident, including teachers Joel Adesiyan and Michael Oyedokun, while praying for the emotional and psychological recovery of the rescued victims after their traumatic experience.

Chuef (Mrs)Alao-Akala stressed that the incident should serve as a wake-up call for governments and other stakeholders to strengthen security in schools and surrounding communities.

Accordubg to her, “We must strengthen security in and around our schools. Children should be able to learn in a safe environment without fear of abduction or violence of any sort. This unfortunate incident should serve as a wake-up call for all stakeholders.”

Chief (Mrs) Alao- Akala also commiserated with the Chuef of Army Staff on the loss of one of the soldiers involved in the rescue operation.

The rescue followed weeks of coordinated operations by the military, police and other security agencies after heavily armed gunmen invaded Community Grammar School, Baptist Nursery and Primary School, and L.A. Primary School in the Esiele and Yawota communities of Oriire Local Government Area.

A total of 39 pupils and seven teachers, including a school principal, were abducted during the attack. The incident sparked nationwide outrage, with the Nigeria Union of Teachers embarking on a strike to demand the safe return of the victims before later suspending the action.

The successful rescue has brought relief to affected families and residents, but the incident has renewed calls for sustained investment in school security to prevent similar attacks on educational institutions across the country.
