The Magongo Community has been thrown into mourning following the death of its revered traditional ruler, His Royal Highness, Sam Bola Ojo, the Olumagongo of Magongoland, who passed away peacefully in the early hours of Monday.

The announcement was made by the Magongo Development Association (MDA), which described the late monarch as a distinguished custodian of the community’s cultural heritage and a symbol of peace, wisdom, unity and selfless service.

According to the association National President, Prince Jordan Alaba Akpata, the late Olumagongo devoted his reign to promoting the progress, stability and development of Magongoland, leaving behind a legacy that would be remembered for generations.
To honour the monarch, the MDA has declared a five-day mourning period from July 20 to July 24, 2026.

During the mourning period, all social celebrations, ceremonies and other festive activities across Magongoland have been suspended. Sons and daughters of the community, both at home and in the diaspora, have also been urged to observe the period with solemnity.

The association further announced the postponement of all MDA meetings, except emergency meetings convened by its executive members. It also disclosed that condolence registers would be opened daily from 9:00 a.m. at both the MDA Secretariat and the Royal Palace for sympathisers to pay their respects.

The MDA expressed its heartfelt condolences to the royal family, the people of Magongo, friends and associates of the late monarch, describing his death as an irreparable loss to the community.

The association prayed for the peaceful repose of the late king’s soul and for God to grant the royal family and the entire Magongo Community the strength to bear the loss.

It added that the government, relevant traditional institutions and appropriate Ministries, Departments and Agencies would, in due course, announce further details regarding the official funeral arrangements.
