As preparations intensify for the October 17, 2026 Local Government Elections in Kogi State, attention is increasingly focused on the Chairman of the Kogi State Independent Electoral Commission (KOSIEC), Hon. Mamman Nda Eri, and the commission’s readiness to conduct a credible electoral process.

Available records indicate that KOSIEC began preparations for the elections well ahead of schedule by issuing the statutory Notice of Election in October 2025, nearly a year before the polls.

The commission also released a comprehensive timetable outlining key electoral activities, including party primaries, candidate nominations, campaigns, and other pre-election procedures.

Under the leadership of Hon. Eri, KOSIEC has consistently engaged political parties, civil society organizations, traditional institutions, security agencies, media practitioners, and development partners through a series of stakeholders’  meetings aimed at ensuring transparency and inclusiveness in the electoral process.

The commission has repeatedly assured residents of its commitment to conducting free, fair, credible, and peaceful elections across the state’s 21 local government areas and 239 electoral wards.

A major indicator of preparedness is the commission’s collaboration with security agencies. Earlier this year, KOSIEC convened meetings with members of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES), where strategies were discussed to secure electoral personnel, materials, and voters.

Hon. Eri emphasized that effective security arrangements are critical to the credibility of the election and pledged continued cooperation with law enforcement agencies.

The commission has also been actively sensitizing stakeholders on the provisions of the revised Kogi State Independent Electoral Commission Law and electoral guidelines.

This effort is intended to reduce disputes, improve compliance by political parties, and strengthen public confidence in the electoral process.

Political observers note that while KOSIEC appears to have put in place the necessary administrative framework, the true test of its preparedness will be the successful implementation of the timetable, timely distribution of election materials, voter education, and maintenance of neutrality throughout the process.

With over four months remaining before the polls, Hon. Mamman Nda Eri and his team have demonstrated significant organizational readiness.

However, sustaining stakeholder confidence, ensuring adequate security, and delivering a transparent electoral process will ultimately determine the success of the 2026 Local Government Elections in Kogi State.
