The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, has discussed the low-key drama that occurred when his men attempted to arrest former Governor Yahaya Bello at his residence but encountered resistance.

Olukoyede disclosed that EFCC agents faced more than thirty armed police officers on the property when they tried to arrest Bello in a footage that Channels TV recently posted on YouTube. He claimed that even though there were more than fifty armed EFCC officials, he chose not to start a gunfight in order to prevent casualties.

Although the EFCC was criticised by some for not forcibly entering the residence, he pointed out that such acts might have resulted in police officers losing their lives.

Olukoyede said engaging in a gunfight with other service members during the attempted arrest of Bello was not the right course of action and he would not have obeyed order from anybody to take such actions.

In Olukoyede’s words: “We met over 30 policemen, I went with over 50 gallant men, we would have exchanged fire. But if we had done it, there would have been casualties. That is what some people are condemning us for, they said ‘Why didn’t you break down the house?”.
