The Senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Senator Sunday Karimi has called on state governors across the country to take a more proactive role in addressing insecurity, stressing that the responsibility for safeguarding lives and property should not be left solely to the Federal Government.
Speaking during a Senate plenary, Karimi said governors, as chief security officers of their respective states, must be held accountable for security challenges within their jurisdictions.
The lawmaker made the remarks while contributing to discussions on the worsening security situation in parts of the country.
He cited the recent abduction of about 28 residents of Aiyedun Bunu in Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State as a troubling example of the growing threat posed by criminal elements.
According to Karimi, state governments are strategically positioned to support security agencies through intelligence gathering, logistical assistance, and community-based security initiatives capable of preventing and responding to emerging threats.
While acknowledging the Federal Government’s role in coordinating the nation’s security architecture, he maintained that governors are closer to the grassroots and better equipped to identify potential dangers before they escalate.
Describing the Aiyedun Bunu kidnapping as unfortunate and heartbreaking, the senator said the incident underscores the urgent need for stronger collaboration between state governments and security agencies.
He noted that governors receive security votes and therefore have a responsibility to deploy available resources toward enhancing security and protecting citizens.
Karimi further emphasized that tackling insecurity requires a coordinated effort among all levels of government.
He highlighted effective intelligence gathering, community engagement, and support for law enforcement agencies as critical components of a successful security strategy.
The senator called on security agencies to intensify efforts toward rescuing the abducted victims and ensuring that those behind the attack are arrested and brought to justice.
He also urged state governments to strengthen local security frameworks and deepen cooperation with federal security agencies to curb kidnapping, banditry, and other criminal activities.
According to him, sustainable solutions to the country’s security challenges can only be achieved when state authorities actively complement federal efforts and take decisive steps to secure their communities.
