Senator representing Kogi East Senatorial District, Jibrin Echocho, has declared his intention to contest the Kogi State governorship election following the outcome of the All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial primary election in the state.

Echocho, who spoke in an emotional video message, expressed anger over the conduct of the primary and accused Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo of turning against him despite his loyalty and support for the administration.

The senator said he had consistently supported both Governor Ododo and former Governor Yahaya Bello, insisting that he never had plans to contest for governor until recent developments surrounding the primary election.

“I am going to contest with you. I have the right,” Echocho declared, warning that the political “battle line has been drawn.”

He maintained that his political structures, empowerment programmes and developmental projects across Kogi East were aimed at strengthening the APC and ensuring electoral success for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Ododo in future elections.

“I have been very supportive of your administration. I have been very loyal to you and to GYB. Why do you want to deny Kogi East the best representation ever?” he queried.

Echocho stated that he had repeatedly informed party leaders and stakeholders that he was not interested in the governorship race, but alleged that attempts to frustrate his third-term senatorial ambition had forced him to reconsider.

According to him, no election was conducted in his ward during the APC primary, alleging that results were allegedly prepared at the Government House before the exercise.

“That result is a nullity, and that result cannot even be announced,” the senator said.
Political observers believe the senator’s outburst may deepen tensions within the APC in Kogi State ahead of future political contests.
