In this exclusive interview, Hon. David Zacharia, a two-term member of the House of Representatives representing the Idah/Ofu/Igalamela-Odolu Federal Constituency — the largest constituency in Kogi East — speaks on why he is seeking another term, his philosophy of generosity, the importance of unity within the Igala nation, and his confidence in the future of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

As Chairman of the House Committee on Safety Standards, he reflects on his political journey, praises the humility of Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, speaks warmly of former Governor Yahaya Bello’s compassion, and commends the leadership style of the Speaker of the House of Representatives. Throughout the conversation, Hon. Zacharia insists that public office is first a moral duty before it becomes a political ambition.

Question: Honorable, you have served two terms in the House of Representatives. Why are you seeking another term?

Hon. David Zacharia:

First, let me express my profound gratitude to the people of Idah, Ofu and Igalamela-Odolu for the trust and confidence they have placed in me. Representing the largest constituency in Kogi East is not merely a political assignment; it is a sacred responsibility.

I am seeking another term not out of personal ambition, but because there is still much work to be done and even greater opportunities ahead for our people.

Legislative experience matters. Over time, you learn the processes of the National Assembly, build valuable relationships, and acquire the ranking and influence needed to deliver more effectively. These advantages are not for personal prestige; they translate directly into real benefits for the constituency.

As Chairman of the House Committee on Safety Standards, I have come to appreciate how important strategic positioning is. A first-term member is still learning the ropes, while a ranking member is in a stronger position to shape policies and attract development.

Another term will allow us to consolidate the gains we have made and open even greater doors for our constituency.

Question: You are often described as “generous to a fault.” Some people even say you do not believe in keeping money for yourself. Why is that?

Hon. David Zacharia:

*(Laughs)* I do not know about being generous to a fault, but I strongly believe that whatever God gives you is meant to serve a purpose.

I came from a humble background and I know what it means to struggle. When you have experienced hardship, you cannot ignore the needs of others.

For me, money is a tool for impact, not something to be hoarded. I do not believe in accumulating wealth while the people around me are suffering. If someone comes to me for school fees, medical bills or support to start a small business, I see it as an opportunity to make a difference.

Leadership is about sacrifice. If you cannot share what you have, then you should not ask people to share their mandate with you.

Question: You have consistently spoken about unity among the Igala nation. Why is this so important to you?

Hon. David Zacharia:

Unity is everything. The Igala nation is blessed with talented, intelligent and hardworking people. However, if we are to command greater respect and attract more development, we must speak with one voice.

Division weakens our bargaining power, but unity makes us a force that cannot be ignored. My appeal has always been that we should put aside petty differences and focus on our collective progress.

The future of our children depends on how united we are today. Development does not come to a divided people. As leaders, we must continue to preach peace, cooperation and mutual respect.

Question: What are the chances of the APC retaining power at the federal level?

Hon. David Zacharia:

I am very confident about the future of our party, the All Progressives Congress. Nigerians understand that nation-building is a gradual process. Reforms may be difficult at first, but they lay the foundation for long-term growth and stability.

The APC has shown courage in taking difficult decisions in the interest of the country. I believe Nigerians will ultimately reward sincerity, resilience and vision.

The important thing is for us as party leaders to remain close to the grassroots, listen to the concerns of the people, and ensure that the dividends of democracy are felt in every community.

If we remain united and focused, I believe the chances of retaining power at the federal level are very strong.

Question: You have spoken highly of Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo. What stands out about him?

Hon. David Zacharia:

Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo is a humble and accessible leader. Humility in leadership is rare, but it is one of the most powerful qualities a leader can possess.

He listens, consults widely, respects elders and values the contributions of young people.

Leadership is not about noise; it is about steady and meaningful impact. Governor Ododo has demonstrated that he understands the needs of the people of Kogi State. His calm disposition and inclusive approach have strengthened governance in the state.

I believe he deserves a second term because continuity will deepen the reforms and projects he has already begun. Stability in leadership creates confidence for investors and gives hope to citizens.

Question: You also maintain a strong admiration for former Governor Yahaya Bello. Why?

Hon. David Zacharia:

Former Governor Yahaya Bello is a compassionate leader. People sometimes misunderstand strong leadership, but those who worked closely with him understand his heart.

He made bold decisions and created opportunities for many young people in Kogi State. His commitment to youth inclusion transformed the political landscape of the state.

Compassion is not always expressed through gentle words; sometimes it is demonstrated through firm actions that secure the future.

I deeply value the mutual respect and cordial relationship between Governor Ododo and former Governor Yahaya Bello. That unity at the top sends a powerful message of stability and continuity.

Question: What is your assessment of the leadership of the Speaker of the House of Representatives?

Hon. David Zacharia:

The Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas, has displayed exceptional leadership qualities. He is calm, strategic and inclusive.

In a diverse House such as ours, managing different interests requires wisdom, patience and the ability to build consensus.

Under his leadership, committees have been empowered to function effectively. As Chairman of the Committee on Safety Standards, I have personally experienced that support.

The Speaker understands that strong committees make for a stronger legislature. His ability to unite members and build consensus has further enhanced the image of the House.

That is true leadership.

Question: Why should your constituents support you for another term?

Hon. David Zacharia:

The answer is simple: continuity brings greater results.

In the National Assembly, seniority matters. Ranking members enjoy greater access to leadership positions, stronger influence during budget negotiations, and a more effective voice in policy formulation.

Our constituency is large and diverse. We need someone who understands its complexities and has already built the networks that can translate into projects, opportunities and meaningful representation.

Starting afresh with a new representative means returning to the learning phase.

This is not about me as an individual; it is about what our constituency stands to gain or lose. Another term will mean bigger projects, stronger representation and deeper impact.

Question: How do you balance politics with humility, given your growing influence?

Hon. David Zacharia:

Humility is not something you put on and take off. It is part of who you are.

I never forget where I come from. I still see myself as a servant of the people.

Power is temporary, but character is permanent. When you treat everyone with respect — from the elderly farmer in Ofu to the young trader in Idah — you remind yourself that leadership is about service.

I believe that the moment a leader begins to see himself as being above the people is the moment he loses his moral authority.

### Question: What message do you have for the youth of your constituency and Kogi State at large?

Hon. David Zacharia:

Stay hopeful and stay engaged.

Politics is not a dirty game; it only becomes dirty when good people stay away. I encourage young people to participate, hold leaders accountable, and prepare themselves for leadership.

I am a product of opportunity and belief. If we create the right environment, our young people can compete successfully anywhere in the world.

Question: Finally, what legacy do you hope to leave behind?

Hon. David Zacharia:

I want to be remembered as a man who gave his all — a representative who did not hoard resources, but shared them; a leader who preached unity among the Igala people; and a lawmaker who used his position to strengthen safety standards and protect lives.

When history is written, I want it to say that David Zacharia served with sincerity, generosity and courage.
