The Kogi State Police Command has launched an investigation into the death of a suspected intruder at Nana College of Nursing and Medical Sciences in Okpo, Olamaboro Local Government Area.

According to a statement issued on Friday by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, the incident occurred in the early hours of April 26, 2026.

The police said a report was received at the Olamaboro Division around 10:30 a.m., prompting immediate deployment of operatives to the scene.

Preliminary investigations revealed that at about 3:00 a.m., a man identified as Andrew Amehson, a resident of Okpo, allegedly attempted to gain unlawful access into the school premises.

He was reportedly intercepted by security personnel on duty at the institution. During the encounter, the suspect was allegedly assaulted by the security operatives. He was later found unresponsive by school staff and rushed to a medical facility, where he was confirmed dead.

Police investigators processed the scene and recovered relevant exhibits to aid the ongoing probe. Homicide detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) have since taken over the case to conduct a detailed investigation.

The Command disclosed that the identities of the security personnel involved have been established, but they are currently at large. Efforts are underway to apprehend them for questioning and possible prosecution.

Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Kogi State, Naziru Bello Kankarofi, condemned the use of excessive force and mob action, stressing that private security personnel and vigilante groups are not empowered to punish suspects under any circumstances.

He reiterated that their role is limited to lawful apprehension and immediate handover to the police for proper investigation.

The Command urged members of the public to remain calm and allow due process to take its course, assuring that a transparent and professional investigation would be carried out.

Police also called on residents to cooperate with law enforcement agencies by providing useful information that could assist in the ongoing investigation.
