In continuation of activities to mark this year’s international women’s day the Kogi State Chapter of the National Association of Women Journalists NAWOJ brought key players on gender issues together to discuss matters affecting Nigerian women.
Gender based violence and affirmative action topped the discussion agenda.
NAWOJ chairperson Anne Olurinde, said Nigerian women deserve a better deal than they are getting presently.
She promised that the state NAWOJ will through her strength as association of journalists to continue to propagate gender equity, and to kick against violence against women of all kinds.
Guest Speaker Hamza Aliyu, emphasised the need to renew the fight against domestic violence, saying women and children are always at the receiving end.
Rights Activists Christy Adejumo, Eunice Agbogun and Stella Adejoh urged the government to include more women in executive positions in line with their affirmative action clamour
On the issue of gender violence, women were advised to speak out whenever they fall victim
Participants also called for the introduction of laws and policies that will protect women and girls from the hands of violent aggressors.
The gathering, witnessed by political and religious leaders, civil society groups was part of activities to mark the 2020 International Women’s Day.
