Members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Christian caucus says they foresee disaster for the ruling party in the same way that the Abiola-Kingibe “pyrrhic” win in the 1993 presidential election was ended by a military coup.
The Christian caucus of the APC, which includes the governor of Plateau state Simon Lalong, cabinet secretary Boss Mustapha, senator Ishaku Abbo, and other prominent politicians, expressed their displeasure and opposition to the party’s choice of two Muslims as its presidential flag bearers in a communique released on Monday. Peoples Gazatte report.
“A Muslim-Muslim ticket is undesirable because the current political and environmental climate in Nigeria differs from that of 1993.
According to Peoples Gazatte, There was never a President Abiola or Vice President Kingibe, so it doesn’t take a genius to realize that the Abiola/Kingibe triumph was a pyrrhic victory. Do we want a replay of that in 2023? reads the communiqué in part.
The statement was released shortly after Mr. Abbo informed the Peoples Gazette that he would oppose Mr. Tinubu’s choice of a Muslim, rejecting the country’s religious balance of an equal number of Muslims and Christians.
Bola Tinubu’s adoption of religious exclusivity as a strategy to win the 2023 election held serious ramifications, warned Christians in the APC.
According to Peoples Gazatte, “This will undoubtedly lead to a significant backlash against the party. The communique emphasized that inclusiveness, fairness, and equity are important to leadership.
The APC Christian caucus stressed at the end of the communique that “Any political party or candidate that elevates the greed of a few above the needs of the generality of the people has no business running the affairs of Nigeria,” noting that Nigeria’s unity was crucial in this “moment of National peril.”
