With a heavy heart and saturated eyes full of tears, I extend my condolences to the families of students of Federal University, Oye, Ekiti (FUOYE), allegedly shot and killed by Police escorts attached to the wife of Ekiti State Governor, Mrs Fayemi.
Two students is reported to have lost their lives during a peaceful protest by the Students Union body of the institution. The Police alleged that the students attacked the convoy of the First Lady while she was in Oye Local Government in continuation of her community engagement and advocacy tour of the state but the wife of the Governor has denied ordering the Police to shoot at the students protesting peacefully.
It is manifestly clear that the Police action clearly violated their oath of office to protect law abiding citizens of this country. Pray, why would the police deploy live ammunitions to quell a peaceful protest organised by students. Is their no rubber bullets or tear-gas to be used in their possession?
Time has come for the Police authorities to come up with very stringent measures against these unconscionable and heartless security officers in uniforms who take innocent Nigerian lives at will!
I hereby call on the Commissioner of Police in Ekiti State, the Inspector General of Police, and the office of the Governor, to commence immediate investigations into the unfortunate development and bring the officers responsible for the shootings to book.
I also call on students and youth Leaders across the country to express their grievances on any issue PEACEFULLY without resulting to violence.
Nigerians are eager and hoping for justice to be done, as we all pray for the slain students to continue to rest in peace.
Signed:
Amb. Oladele John Nihi,
President, NYCN.
