A frontline aspirant for the Kogi East senatorial seat under the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Joseph Ameh Erico, has dismissed criticisms trailing a viral video that captured him kneeling before the Kogi State Accountant General, Dr. Habibat Oyiza Tijani Onumoko, during a visit to her residence in Okene.
The footage, which circulated widely on social media, sparked reactions from critics who expressed displeasure over the gesture, describing it as an attempt to curry political favour.
However, in a statement issued in response, Erico maintained that his action was rooted in cultural respect and not political desperation, insisting that he owes no apology to anyone.
He explained that Onumoko holds the traditional title of “Ebule-Jonu of Ankpa Kingdom,” conferred on her by the Ejeh of Ankpa in accordance with Igala customs and traditions, adding that the act of kneeling was in line with long-standing cultural practices.
According to him, “I owe no one any apology for recognizing and respecting constituted traditional authority. The title bestowed on Chief (Hajia) Dr. Habibat Oyiza Tijjani is legitimate and rooted in our cultural heritage.”
Erico further noted that during her coronation as a First-Class Chief, all attendees, including himself, observed the tradition of kneeling in reverence, stressing that such gestures symbolise deep respect for traditional institutions.
The senatorial hopeful, who hails from Ankpa Federal Constituency, reaffirmed his commitment to upholding the customs and values of the Igala people, emphasizing that honouring traditional title holders should not be misinterpreted.
He also pointed out that during a recent Eid-el-Fitr homage visit, Onumoko demonstrated respect for Igala traditions, underscoring a shared commitment to cultural unity.
Erico called on the public to disregard attempts to misrepresent his actions, urging citizens to promote unity and preserve cultural heritage rather than fuel unnecessary controversy.
