Residents of Odo-Ere, the headquarters of Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State, were thrown into panic on Monday evening following an attack by suspected armed bandits that claimed the life of a Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) officer while his abducted daughter escaped from the bandit.
Sources from the Command identified the deceased officer as Mr. Ayo, an operative of the NSCDC, who was reportedly shot in the head during the attack.
According to eyewitness accounts, the officer was immediately rushed to a nearby medical facility for treatment but was confirmed dead on arrival. His remains were subsequently deposited at a mortuary.
The attackers were also said to have abducted Mr. Ayo’s first daughter before escaping from the area, leaving residents in fear and uncertainty over the worsening security situation in the community.
It was gathered that she later escaped from the bandit and made back home.
As of the time of filing this report, security agencies had not issued any official statement regarding the incident, while efforts to rescue the abducted victim were reportedly ongoing.
The latest attack has heightened concerns among residents of Yagba West and neighbouring communities, with many calling on security authorities and relevant government agencies to strengthen security measures and tackle the growing threat of banditry and kidnappings in the area.
