A legal luminary and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Rev John Baiyeshea, has called on journalists in the country to fight for justice and equity in the country through professional reportage.
Baiyeshea who made this call at the 3rd edition of Kwara NUJ Carol Service held at the NUJ Press Center lamented what he described as the current alarming rate of insecurity in the country.
Represented by Pastor Robert Fawehinmi, the legal luminary who is also a labourer in the Vineyard condemned corruption in the country urging journalists to rise up to the challenge and educate the people to shun all forms of vices.
The Legal Luminary called on the people to preach the message of love which the season connotes stressing that only love can unite the people.
Speaking in the same vein, Most Rev. Paul Adegboyega Olawoore the Kwara State Chairman of CAN who chaired the service called on journalists to be good ambassadors of Christ in the course of their work.
In his words, “I am here today to reflect with you about Jesus Christ, the reason for this season of celebration, and on how a Journalist and every child of God can translate the reason for Jesus’ coming into his/her daily living.
“Let me say here that your profession, among others, is significant in shaping the life of the nation positively, for relative peace and sustainable development. Therefore, as NUJ Christian Fellowship, much is given to you and much is being expected.
“The bible says to whom much is given much is expected. We cannot afford to fail our LORD and Saviour, Jesus Christ. I commend journalists/broadcasters and other media house workers that not only do thorough investigative journalism but also risk their lives/institutions in standing for the truth in their reportage and broadcast. Hope we still have such in our country Nigeria?”
In his remarks, the State NUJ chairman, Ahmed ‘Lanre Lateef affirmed that there is no religious bias in the Council. He agreed that religion has been used to divide the country for too long noting that true peace, justice and equity can only be achieved when the people see themselves as one irrespective of religious or ethnic leanings.
In his goodwill message, the Board Chairman, Christian Pilgrims Welfare Board, Ilorin and former chairman of CAN in the state, Evangelist Prof. Timothy Opoola, urged Nigerians to turn to God as Christ is the reason why we celebrate the season.
The Hon. Commissioner for Communication, Hon. Bosede Olaitan Buraimoh who read the third lessson at the Service stressed the need for journalists in the country to be patriotic always.
She stated that the present administration in the State is committed to the welfare of journalists in the state as examplified by its commitment to the welfare of journalists in the three State owned media houses.
In his remarks, the Kwara state CAN Secretary and Minister in charge of Unity Baptist Church, Rev Dr. Reuben Ibitoye who read the second lesson for the service noted that journalists who are the bridge between the people and the government must be professional in the discharge of their duties.
Earlier, the chairman of the Kwara NUJ Christian Fellowship, MSA Bunmi Adedoyin JP had appreciated God for the hosting of the 3rd edition of the Carol. He urged Christians in the Council to be rededicated to the things of God and the propagation of the gospel.
Choirs who ministered at the service include the NUJ Choir; Unity Baptist Church Choir; Awareness Singers, English Chapel, C&S Movement Church District Headquarters Ilorin; CAC Moranugba choir, Biada Ilorin and City of Refuge Orphanage among others.
