ActionAid International has elected Nigerian seasoned journalist, author, and media expert Mr. Mac Imoni Amarere as a member of the International Board with oversight over ActionAid mission work globally.
Amarere joins other elected members Juana Bengoa of Spain, Sophia Mbeyela and Abdallah Mashausi of Tanzania as the newest members of the Board.
Hajia Fatima Aliko Mohammed, a lawyer with over 28 years’ experience in Commercial and Corporate Law was also elected as a member of the 2023 Assembly Organising Committee. She, alongside Aminata Patricia Lebbie of Sierra Leone will be organising the 2023 AAI General Assembly meeting.
The elections were held during the 2022 ActionAid International Annual General Assembly in Madrid, Spain on Thursday, 30th June 2022.
Dr. Jummai Umar-Ajijola, the ActionAid Nigeria Board Chairperson and Convener of the General Assembly, expressed her confidence in Mr. Amarere and Hajia Fatima to continue Nigeria’s strong tradition of strengthening the Federation’s governance systems.
According to the 2023 Assembly Convener, the election of Mr. Amarere and Hajiya Fatima “reflect the trust of the Actionaid Federation in Nigeria and the capacity of Nigeria to support the actualization of the Feminist Agenda of Actionaid International. Nigeria is indeed grateful for this trust by the Federation.”
Amarere is the Vice Board Chair of ActionAid Nigeria, where he serves as the Chairperson of the Governance and Board Development Committee (GBDC).
Hajia Fatima Aliko Mohammed is a member of the ActionAid Nigeria Board and its GBDC. Their strategic contributions to the AAN Board, alongside other Board members, are critical to the achievements of ActionAid Nigeria overall objectives.
With over 40 years of experience working with civil society organisations and making valuable contributions in the African media space, Amarere served as a National Commissioner in the Human Rights Commission of Nigeria between 2005 and 2009.
He is currently the Executive Director of DAAR media academy, the training arm of the DAAR media conglomerate.
