….. Concerned about the plight of Commuters, residents.

The federal road linking Toto, Nasarawa, Keffi and federal capital territory, FCT, has been cut off leading to recurring fatal accident on daily basis and claiming lives of commuters and other users.

Reports says increased rainfall has worsened the situation as a result flooding which have constantly wash away the road and bridges by making life more difficult to the commuters and residents who are mainly farmers.

The places affected by the disaster include, Gudun Karya bridge, Sauka and Buga all situated in FCT.

The Executive Chairman, Toto Local Government Council, Honourable Aliyu Abdullahi Tashas has appealed to Federal Roads Maintenance Agency, FERMA, for immediate reconstruction of the bridges and road as to restore normalcy.

This was contained in a statement issued by Yahaya Idris Toto, Senior Special Assistant, SSA, on Media and Communication, on Sunday and made available to Journalists in Toto, the LG headquarters, asking the federal government to quickly intervene and save the collapsed bridges and road linking FCT, Toto, Nasarawa and Keffi even as he said the ugly situation has brought an untold hardship to Nigerians.

The council boss noted that it is also a gateway to other neighboring states such as Plateau, Kogi, Benue and FCT.

Hon Tashas described the situation as worrisome, adding that motorists and road users are now panic due to it’s negative effect.

This year heavy downpour has caused the damaged, calling on FERMA on the need to urgently address it in order to save more lives.

“Action needs to be expedited by the ministries to cushion the effect of this erosion and save the lives of our people”.

According to the Chairman, “My attention has been drawn to the very rapid coastal erosion along the Gudun Karya bridge, Sauka and Buga all situated in FCT, which he said has setback for the commuters and residents.

“Base on my finding, the ugly situation was caused as a result of intensity of the rainfalls as witnessed recently leading to the inundation/overflow of the River bank which also serve as only gate way the collector basin of those affected areas.

“With this development, we’re using this medium to reach out to the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), the agency saddle with responsibility of fixing federal roads and bridges to come to our aid by attracting the maintenance of the said roads and bridges.

Toto local government area is bounded to the north by the Federal Capital Territory, to the east by Nasarawa local government area, and to the south and west by Kogi State.

It has a population estimate of 119,077 according to 2006 census.

Toto Local Government with it’s headquarters in Toto has three districts namely Toto, Gadabuke and Umaisha.
