The Manager Director, (MD) of National Inland Waterways Authority, (NIWA), Lokoja, Dr. George Moghalu has visited Baro Port in Niger State, saying Waterways holds great benefits for Nigeria.
He was received alongside his entourage by the people of the community.
Addressing the community he said that the agency would do everything possible under the law to encourage the private sector to key into the industry, saying that the watereways holds great potentials for the envisaged rapid development of the nation.
Dr. Moghalu said it was the importance he accorded the port that made Baro to be his first choice of his familiarisation visit.
He maintained that the Authority was ready to partner with all government agencies, local and state governments and the private sector to make sure that Baro port becomes functional so as to create wealth for Baro community, the locals and Niger State people.
He equally promised to discuss the issue of the road leading to the port with both Niger State and the Federal government for urgent intervention.
In the areas of employment opportunity and other benefits derivable from the sitting of the port in Baro, the MD promised that the locals will be given priority when the port becomes fully operational.
In addition, Dr. Moghalu said the railway lines at Baro will be brought back to life so as make movement of goods and services more easier.
While noting that Baro port is very strategic to the development of Nigeria, the MD said that he will keep constant touch with the port until it becomes fully operational.
