As the countdown to the 2027 Nigerian general elections gradually begins, political activities across the country are gathering momentum.

Aspirants are engaging party leaders, traditional institutions and grassroots stakeholders as they position themselves for the contests ahead. In Kogi State, one development that has generated considerable attention is the decision of former governor Yahaya Adoza Bello to contest for the Kogi Central Senatorial District seat.

Bello formally declared his intention last December during a visit to the palace of the Ohinoyi of Ebiraland, where he met with traditional rulers, community leaders and political stakeholders. His declaration has since sparked widespread conversations across the district and beyond.

Notably, the current governor of the state, Ahmed Usman Ododo, reportedly encouraged his predecessor to heed calls from party leaders and constituents who believe he still has much to contribute to public service.

The appeal, made in the presence of traditional authorities and community leaders, underscores the level of confidence many stakeholders continue to place in the former governor.

Bello governed Kogi State between 2016 and 2024 under the platform of the All Progressives Congress, leaving office after completing two terms. During his tenure, his administration pursued an ambitious agenda that combined infrastructure development, institutional reforms, improved security coordination and expanded opportunities for youth and women.

Across the state, road construction and rehabilitation projects improved connectivity between rural communities and urban centres. One of the most visible urban developments was the construction of the Ganaja Flyover in Lokoja, the state’s first major flyover, alongside the upgrading of township roads and expansion of water supply infrastructure.

The education sector also witnessed notable investments. Hundreds of basic education schools were rehabilitated while thousands of teachers were recruited to strengthen the workforce. The administration introduced education reforms aimed at improving learning outcomes and expanding access to science and technology education.

In healthcare, the construction of a 250-bed reference hospital in Okene, alongside the upgrading of general hospitals and primary healthcare centres across the state, helped strengthen medical service delivery. Additional health workers were recruited to support the expanding facilities.

Security, a major concern in many parts of the country, also received significant attention during Bello’s tenure. His administration established the Kogi State Vigilante Service and strengthened collaboration with federal security agencies, initiatives that many observers believe helped improve safety across major highways and communities.

Agriculture was another priority area. Through the distribution of farm inputs, mechanised equipment and the establishment of agricultural processing initiatives, the administration sought to boost food production and rural livelihoods.

Beyond infrastructure and economic initiatives, Bello’s government was widely recognised for its deliberate inclusion of young people and women in governance. Youths occupied several strategic positions in government while women were appointed into key roles at both state and local government levels.

These initiatives, taken together, formed part of a broader effort to reposition the state’s governance architecture and promote inclusive development.

As the political landscape ahead of 2027 continues to evolve, Bello remains a significant figure within the All Progressives Congress in Kogi State. His enduring grassroots network, built during his years in office, provides him with a formidable political structure across the Kogi Central district.

The senatorial race in Kogi Central is expected to attract considerable attention given the strategic importance of the district and the calibre of political actors likely to participate. Party loyalty, grassroots mobilisation and political experience will all play decisive roles in shaping the outcome.

For many supporters within the district, Bello’s entry into the race represents an opportunity to bring his administrative experience and political influence to the National Assembly.

They believe his familiarity with the needs of the state and his ability to mobilise support across communities could translate into effective representation at the federal level.

Politics, however, remains a contest of ideas, vision and leadership. As consultations and alignments continue ahead of the 2027 elections, the people of Kogi Central will ultimately determine who best represents their aspirations.

For now, one fact remains clear: Yahaya Adoza Bello has once again positioned himself at the centre of the political conversation in Kogi Central.
