An Islamic cleric, Sheikh Goni Aisami, was shot and killed on Friday in Yobe State by two men posing as troops at about 10 p.m. on Friday.
Sheikh Goni Aisami was traveling when he saw two men who asked for a ride and identified themselves as members of the 241 Recce Model Battalion, Nguru.
He didn’t think twice before giving one of the suspects a ride to Jaji-Maji, who was wearing a mufti and toting a camp bed.
The Muslim cleric pulled over when he approached Jaji-Maji in order to urinate. He gave the main suspect a ride, and when he got back into the car, the suspect pulled an AK-47 and fired him twice and killed him.
He called the second suspect, who arrived at the site in another vehicle, after killing him.
They needed assistance from a watch group in Jaji-Maji since they tried to flee in the car he had driven to the site, which developed a defect.
When the Islamic cleric’s body was discovered at the scene, the vigilantes swiftly alerted the police, who then arrested the two perpetrators.
