A pro-Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) group, PDP New Generation, has obtained a Nomination and Expression of Interest Forms for Senator Dino Melaye to contest election for Kogi West senatorial seat of Kogi State in 2023.
The group also donated a sum of N500,000 to Melaye’s campaign activities.
The forms and financial donation were presented to Melaye on Monday at his Abuja residence when the group visited the former lawmaker and Kogi PDP chieftain, as part of solidarity and familiarisation tours of the PDP New Generation Group National Executives led by its Director-General, Audu Mahmood, to brief Melaye about the group and to convey his appointment as the Grand Patron of the organisation.
According to a statement signed by the group’s director, Media & Strategy, Dare Akinniyi, the DG also spoke on need to have a united PDP as 2023 elections draw near.
Akinniyi quoted Mahmood as saying that the presence of Senator Melaye in the 8th and 9th Senate briefly was highly impactful to lawmaking and Nigeria as a whole, lamenting the absence of the vocal ex-lawmaker in the current 9th Senate, saying the development has a created a very big lacuna, hence the group pleaded with him to return back to the 10th Senate to defend and protect the interests of Nigerians.
Consequently, the Kogi State chapter of the PDP New Generation Group donated the sum of N500,000 as a token to Senator Melaye to support his journey to the 10th Senate. The national body of the group purchased his Senate Nomination and Express of Interest Forms and promised to ensure that they give all necessary support to see that he is sworn in as a member of the 10th Senate in June, 2023.
“We at the PDP New Generation will continue to support all party faithful, and promote the activities of the youth and women amongst us. As young people ourselves, we will continue to seek the development of our great party and advocate for youth inclusiveness and participation in politics. We are the leaders of today and the platform for young people is the PDP,” Mahmood said.
Responding, Senator Melaye accepted his appointment of Grand Patron of PDP New Generation Group even as he expressed surprise at the group’s gesture.
“This is emotional and overwhelming for me. I thank you all and I thank God,” Melaye said.
The statement added that the group will continue its familiarisation visits across the country in order meet PDP stakeholders especially on the issues of youths and women inclusion.
“With a structure, strength, influence and network of youths and women cutting across all corners of the country, the organisation advances the role of young people and women in decision-making process by promoting active participation in politics, governance and amplifying marginalised voices to influence their leaders, advocate for growth, overcome barriers to meaningful political participation and promote more vibrant, resilient and inclusive democracy,” it stated.
