The Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, has suggested a reward structure for members of the press in Nigeria.
The governor addressing journalists at the just-concluded “First GYB Annual Media Chat/Seminar for Political and Crime Editors/Reporters,” hinted that having a recompense platform for the press would encourage them to do more as the practitioners are in a profession that requires them to work really hard for daily engagement and communications in impacting the society.
“journalists, it’s never really about the money while doing their jobs; it’s about pursuing a career in the field that requires them to put in a lot of work and hours every day of the week. It’s about having the opportunity to share captivating stories every single day.
The favorite aspect of being a journalist is being able to magnify or swell the voices of those that are otherwise muffled or swaddled in our society. They work in bringing the attention of the government to important issues that affect people in our society through daily engagements and communications. But in all they do, what is their reward? Though no amount of reward can commensurate the risk and pains they go through to do their jobs I think It is time there should be a reward system; intrinsic motivation and extrinsic incentives that will encourage the journalists to be more patriotic and committed to their profession,” governor Bello said.
Analysts have said that it would be a turning point for journalism in Nigeria if the governor’s suggestion is being looked into by the Federal and State Ministry of Information, the corporate organization, and other authorities.
Bello rewarded journalists who came top in an easy competition in the event with cash prizes.
The gesture suggests that if gov Bello responds to the calls from Nigerians to contest for the 2023 presidency in affirmation, the media practitioners could experience better working conditions and welfare.
