Kwara state government has provided relief materials worth over N80 million to about 1,800 households affected by flood in the three local government areas of Moro, Edu and Patigi.
Some of the palliative items distributed to affected victims of 2020 flood disaster included cement, roofing sheets, nails of different sizes, rice, semovita and vegetable oil.
Speaking during the flagship flag off distribution of the materials in Jebba, Moro local government area on Wednesday, the chairman, Implementation committee, Architect Aliyu Mohammed, said that a committee has been constituted by the traditional ruler of Jebba, Oba Aabdulkadir Adebara, to ensure the materials get to the affected victims.
Architect Mohammed, who called for attitudinal change among residents of the three local government areas to prevent future flooding, enjoined the people to discourage building structures against water flow and desist from dumping refuse in gutters or culverts.
The governor’s aide, who said that the government planned to replicate Ilorin master plan in all major towns and cities in the state, said that the effort would ensure proper planning.
Also speaking, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Professor Mamman Jibril, enjoined members of the local committee to ensure that all items get to target victims,
while urging residents of the area to ensure judicious use of the items.
The SSG, who told the people that the government intervention was not in any way proportionate to their losses suffered, said that the most important aspect of the intervention was the act and level of concern of the government to its people towards serving as succour and sense of belonging to the victims.
The traditional ruler of the ancient town of Jebba, Oba Alhaji Aabdulkadir Adebara, commended the governor for the reach out to victims of last year flood disaster in the area.
The 93-year-old monarch, who thanked the governor for his love and kindness to people of the area, especially commended him for his sympathy visit paid to Ganka, a community in Jebba where petrol tanker caught fire that killed six people and destroyed property recently.
“For having us in mind and taking necessary action to address our plights, we pray that this administration would end successfully”, he said.
