‎Former governorship candidate in Kogi State, Yakubu Murtala Ajaka, has extended an apology to former Governor Alhaji Yahaya Bello while calling for peace, unity, and collective progress across the state.
‎
‎Ajaka, who contested the November 2023 gubernatorial election under the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), made this known in a public statement issued on Monday signed by him in his official Facebook page, where he reflected on the aftermath of the election and its impact on political relationships in the state.
‎
‎In the statement, he acknowledged that the intensity of the 2023 electoral contest led to strained relationships and deepened divisions, particularly between himself and the immediate past governor.
‎
‎“The political disagreement between me and the then Governor of Kogi State, His Excellency Yahaya Bello, was marked by strong differences,” Ajaka stated, adding that the circumstances were driven by passion and commitment to their respective causes rather than personal animosity.
‎
‎In a conciliatory tone, Muri Ajaka extended what observers describe as a significant gesture of reconciliation.
‎
‎“Today, in the overriding interest of peace, unity, and the progress of our dear state, I believe it is both necessary and honourable to rise above the past. I extend a hand of understanding and goodwill, and where my actions or words may have caused offence, I profoundly apologize in the spirit of reconciliation,” he said.
‎
‎He further noted that he has chosen to let go of all grievances and move forward without reservation, emphasizing the need for healing and collective advancement.
‎
‎The former SDP candidate also used the opportunity to appreciate his supporters across the state, including elders, youths, women, and political associates who stood by him during the electioneering period.
‎
‎He paid tribute to supporters who lost their lives during the political process, describing their sacrifice as one that must never be forgotten, while praying for eternal rest for the deceased and comfort for their families.
‎
‎Ajaka stressed that his decision to speak at this time aligns with his commitment to continuous consultation and ensuring that his actions reflect the collective interest of the people of Kogi East.
‎
‎He urged political actors and citizens alike to prioritize unity over division, noting that no ambition or contest should outweigh the peace and stability of the state.
‎
‎“At this critical point in our state’s journey, we must remind ourselves that no ambition, no contest, and no individual interest is greater than the peace, stability, and collective advancement of Kogi State,” he said.
‎
‎Calling for a shift in focus, Ajaka emphasized the need to move beyond past disagreements and work collectively toward a more inclusive and prosperous future.
‎
‎“Our focus must now shift from division to unity and collaboration, and from the past to the future we must build together,” he added.
‎
‎Political analysts say the statement may signal a new phase of reconciliation and realignment within Kogi State’s political space ahead of future electoral engagements.
