A lady simply identified as Happiness was allegedly trafficked to Libya before she fell into the hands of law enforcement agents, who accused her of engaging in commercial s3x activities, which is illegal in the country.

Narating the incident that led to the death of Happiness on 7th December, 2023 in Tripoli, a source said the deceased who hailed from Agenebode, Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State, was brought to Libya in 2022.

“We are against such journey because we know many of these girls coming from home may end up in bad situation or exposed to commercial s3x work. Apart from contracting diseases through such work, many sometimes end up in prison,” he said.

The source, who craved anonymity, said in the case of Happiness, Libyan Police reportedly bursted a syndicate during a raid and she was arrested over allegation bordering on commercial s3x activities.

” She was taken to prison and she fell ill, they tried their best all to no avail and they reportedly dropped her under the bridge, where she was picked by one of the Yoruba leaders, who now called a man from Auchi about the incident.

” She was taken to Nigerian community house and from there to International Organisation of Migration (IOM), and we were told she has to do a surgery, that she was under a family planning method that needed to be removed.

” When the sickness got worse, she was admitted in University of Tripoli Teaching Hospital. She spent three weeks in the hospital and a girl from Jattu was with her.

” When we saw the teaching hospital was not showing enough seriousness, we contributed money and took her to a private hospital for the treatment.

” We also booked flight to take her back to Nigeria, but each time the date of departure got near, her condition would change, until she died early morning on 7th December,” he said.

He, however, appealed for support to deceased family.

The source, who called on relevant authorities in Nigeria to address the issue of trafficking, said many girls trafficked abroad are passing through difficult times.

Meanwhile, as the Edo community were still mourning the death of Happiness, another young man from Fugar, Etsako Central Local Government Area, identified as Abey also passed away on 9th December.

Abey reportedly died after a brief illness in Tripoli
