Kogi State Governor Alhaji Ahmed Ododo has formally handed over the construction of a proposed international airport in Kogi State to contractors, setting the stage for the commencement of the multi-billion naira project at Zariagi on the outskirts of Lokoja.

Represented at the ceremony on Wednesday by the Commissioner for Transportation, Hon. Victor Atuluku, the governor described the airport project as a major step toward transforming the state into a centre for investment, trade and industrial development.

Speaking at the project site, Atuluku said the airport would unlock Kogi State’s economic potential by attracting both local and foreign investors, creating employment opportunities and improving the state’s socio-economic standing.

He said the project was designed not only to improve air transportation, but also to serve as a catalyst for economic diversification and long-term growth.

According to the governor, the airport will position Kogi State as a destination for multinational companies, investors and other business interests, while also opening up opportunities for artisans, contractors and small-scale enterprises.

Ododo assured residents that his administration would ensure the speedy completion of the project by deploying the necessary manpower and resources to meet the delivery timeline.

He added that the airport would connect the state to major economic centres across the country and beyond, thereby boosting commerce and expanding opportunities for development.

The project was awarded to China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation and Gamji Construction Company, which are expected to deliver the airport in line with international standards.

The governor charged the contractors to maintain high standards of professionalism and quality while ensuring that work progresses without delay.

He also appealed to residents and members of the host community to support the project and cooperate with contractors to ensure smooth execution.

Ododo further assured prospective investors of adequate security, stressing that his administration remains committed to safeguarding lives and property in order to create an enabling environment for investment and development.

The formal handover of the project marks a significant milestone in Kogi State’s infrastructure drive and underscores the administration’s commitment to delivering projects aimed at improving the state’s economy and quality of life.
