A 23 year old woman, Maryam Mohammed, has been arrested in Kano State by officers of the Nigeria Police force, for allegedly kidnapping her former boyfriend.
Her reason for the abduction? Her former boyfriend refused to marry her after dating her for 6 years.
According to Sahara reporters, Maryam, popularly known as ‘Hajiya’ was arrested at Jaba quarters, Ungongo local government area of Kano State.
In rather bizarre fashion, the suspect was picked up by police officers while negotiating ransom with a family member of one of the captives in her possession, last week Tuesday.
The suspect claims to have been introduced to kidnapping by her uncle, one Hamza Dogo of Butsa village, Gusau Local Government Area in Zamfara State after she parted ways with her ex-boyfriend.
According to Maryam, after hr uncle taught her the deadly craft, her first victim was her former boyfriend who had refused to marry her after 6 years of courtship and eventually dumped her.
In her statement, her uncle had told her to kidnap the young man and have him in their custody till he paid some money.
His family eventually paid five million Naira to secure his release, from which the suspect confessed to have been paid eight hundred thousand. Maryam said her share was used to rent an apartment at Jabba quarters.
Kano State Police Spokesman, DSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, while parading the suspects, disclosed that investigations conducted by the force revealed that Maryam’s former husband, one Sani Ismail, from Bidda LGA of Zamfara State, was a notorious cattle rustler who was killed in Butsa village Zamfara while carting away rustled cows.
According to the police, after the death of the husband, her uncle, a notorious kidnapper, relocated Maryam to Kano, where she rented various apartments, even paying as much as six hundred thousand per annum and turned them into dens for their kidnapping activities.
The woman was arrested alongside two other members of the syndicate.
