The Speaker of the Kogi State House of Assembly, Hon. Prince Mathew Kolawole, has said that the state assembly is not a rubber stamp– legislature but rather they are discharging its responsibilities as expected.
Speaking with newsmen on Sunday, in Lokoja, th speaker disagreed with those that are of the believe that the legislature must be combative in its dealings with the executive arm.
His words, “The Kogi State House of Assembly is not a rubber stamp. What will be the benefit to the ordinary man if the assembly engages in needless friction with the state executive under our amiable governor, His Excellency, Alhaji Yahaya Bello.
“”The governor will for example forward a bill to the assembly, which is called executive bill, which are mostly of benefit to the people of the state.
“Take for example the issue of counterpart funding. The governor will usually send a bill to the assembly for approval for the release of the state’s portion. The money is there, and if the assembly fails to approve, the Federal Goverment may not care. At the end, who is the loser? Kogites of course.
“Ours is to work in harmony with the state executive, to assist the governor in delivering on the dividends of democracy to the good people of the state. That is remains our priority, and we will continue to cooperate and assist His Excellency in this respect.”
