People of Patigi community in the Patigi local government area of Kwara state have decried shortage of teachers in core subjects in secondary schools in the area.
The people appealed to Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq to use the ongoing statewide teachers’ recruitment exercise to employ teachers in science related subjects for the schools, particularly, the first secondary school in the area, Patigi Secondary School.
Speaking with journalists in Patigi, a community leader and the immediate past ambassador to Japan, Professor Mohammed Gana Yisa, said that the 50 years old school needs renovation of its science laboratory, staff quarters, books, Information Communication Technology (ICT) facility, furniture and science reagent materials.
Professor Yisa, who is the president of the old student association of the premier secondary school in the community, commended the state government on recent renovation of schools in the state, however, added that structures alone cannot make schools to be successful.
Speaking on the activities marking the golden jubilee of the Patigi Secondary School old student association (PASSOSA), Ambassador Yisa said that some old students have been contributing their individual quotas in addressing the infrastructural problem bedevilling the school.
The PASSOSA President explained that the essence of the celebration was to bring back old students to reflect on where their lives started.
He said the event would enable the old students showcase the achievements of the school over the years, adding that it would also chart a way forward for the school.
Yisa, a one-time Deputy Speaker of the state House of Assembly, said the programme would also feature free medical outreach for the people of Patigi community for any ailment while 30 people are expected to undergo cataract surgery for their eyes between April 7 and 9, 2021.
He disclosed that three founding fathers of Patigi Secondary School including late former Etsu of Patigi, Alhaji Idris Gana; late former federal Commissioner, Alhaji Ahman Saba Pategi and an educationist, Alhaji Mahmud Koro, would be honoured at the grand finale of the event billed for April 10, 2021.
