Gunmen have kidnapped Peter Jediel, chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Taraba state. He was reportedly abducted in the early hours of Sunday.
Fidelis Jediel, his brother who confirmed the news, said the NLC chairman was abducted at his residence in Sunkani, Ardo- Kola local government area of the state at about 12:55 am.
The gunmen were said to have shot into the air and forced their way into the victim’s compound.
The family of the victim said the suspected kidnappers are yet to established contact with the family.
Jidiel’s abduction comes two weeks after Salihu Dovo, chairman of the same local government area, was killed by gunmen who kidnapped him at his residence.
The kidnappers were said to have called an official of the local government to inform them that they had murdered the victim and where to recover his corpse.
Owing to the spate of kidnappings and other criminalities across Nigeria, Darius Ishaku, the state governor, had asked the federal government to allow Nigerians carry licenced guns to defend themselves.
The governor who lamented the worsening state of insecurity said: “The security in this country has gone to the lowest ebb and we have to all wake up. We as leaders have given our advises severally as to the change to the security architecture, you cannot keep doing one thing over and over and expect a different result,” he said.
“If we cannot be able to provide security for our citizens, then allow all the citizens to buy AK-47 because if everybody is licensed with AK-47, I swear nobody will come to your house, or peradventure he does then it depends on who is faster.
“In a situation where we are all gagged with one security system that has been unable to work, and we are told to sit down and be counting the day our turn will come, I do not agree with it.”
