The kogi State council has approved a Memo containing the bills for the establishment of KOGI STATE University, Kabba and other matters connected, 2023 while the State Attorney General was directed to transmit the bill to the State House of Assembly for consideration and passage into Law.
In a briefing by the State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Hon. Wemi Jones, he stated that a University Law is one of the pre-requisite for the National University Commission (NUC) to recognise and approve any established university in Nigeria.
He hinted that the State government was working towards ensuring that before the end of the coming weeks, NUC would have given approval to the State University adding that the recently inaugurated implementation committee chaired by renowned Proffessor of English Language, Prof. Olu Obafemi was working alongside other stakeholders to speed up the process.
The Commissioner who used the medium to again clarify on the rumour over the conversion of the College of Education Technical, Kabba or about the location of the University noted that the news was false and an unauthenticated information which was largely a premonition by some individuals.
He however pointed out that the committee after several considerations concluded that it was more expedient to start the Kogi State University, Kabba at the current site of College of Education Technical Kabba while the College of Education will be relocated to another venue and the government was considering MopaMoro Local Government Area for the task.
Meanwhile the immediate past Speaker of Kogi State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. (Prince) Matthew Kolawole has eulogized Governor Yahaya Bello for siting the newly established Kogi State University in Kabba, stressing that his action is monumental in that regard.
The former lawmaker disclosed this in a press statement signed by his Special Adviser Media and Publicity, Femi Olugbemi and made available to newsmen in Lokoja.
According to him, he said he has no doubt in his mind that the determination of Governor Yahaya Bello led administration to take the state to another level of developments especially in the educational sector is real and noted that he is a God sent Governor that has come to uplift the living standard of the people.
He noted that Governor Yahaya Bello has continued to ensure fairness, equity and justice in all his actions, pointed out that he was the only one who recognize the three federal constituencies in Kogi West instead of the usual Okun and Lokoja/Koto Karfe, stressing that he has no regrets of joining his government in 2017 as his loyalty has paid off.
He said the people of Okunland shall continue to be grateful for fulfilling their long aged heart desires to have a higher learning institutions within their territory, adding that it is now a win win situation for Yagba and Kabba-Bunu/Ijumu to have both the university and College of Education Technical, promised to continue to be loyal and identify with Governor Yahaya Bello till God calls him home.
He also charged members of the 8th assembly to expedite actions in passing the bill into law without wasting time as it is an opportunity for them to create an indelible records for themselves.
He thanked the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Hon Wemi Jones, the Chairman, Technical Committee, Professor Olu Obafemi and other Exco members for a job well done to recommend the existing campus of the Kogi State College of Education Technical, Kabba as take off campus for the university.
He also said that the people of Kabba as the host community will continue to maintain the usual peace and decorum to fast track final take off of the university in Kabba.
