Rector of Federal Polytechnic, Idah, Dr. Yahaya Baba Usman has called for visionary leadership in shaping National development.
Dr. Usman made the call at the Maiden Edition of International Conference of School of General Studies, Federal Polytechnic, Idah.
The Rector who spoke on the topic, the Multidimensional Leadership Approach and National Development, said the need for visionary leadership can not be overemphasized so as to navigate the complexities of a rapidly changing world marked by technological advancements, socio-economic disparities, and unprecedented global challenges.
He described Multidimensional leadership as a leadership style that encompasses various competencies, perspectives, and approaches to address the complexities of contemporary challenges.
Dr. Usman noted that the Multidimensional leadership transcends traditional models; embraces diversity, fosters inclusivity, and promotes collaboration across various sectors and disciplines.
“In this era, effective leaders must be adaptive, innovative, and resilient, capable of addressing intricate issues from multiple perspectives. They must harness the strengths of individuals and communities, leveraging the collective intelligence to craft solutions that are not only effective but also sustainable”.
“As we delve into the nuances of multidimensional leadership, we will explore its fundamental principles and the myriad ways it can catalyze national development. We will examine case studies that reveal the transformative power of inclusive governance, participatory decision-making, and community engagement. By investing in our collective human capital, empowering marginalized voices, and fostering a culture of collaboration, we can pave the way for a more equitable and prosperous future for all”.
He urged leaders at all levels to think critically about their roles as leaders whether in government, business, civil society, or academia and to consider how their actions and choices can contribute to a broader vision of national development.
“Let us engage in meaningful dialogue, share insights, and inspire one another to lead with purpose, integrity, and a steadfast commitment to the common good”.
While describing National development as the economic, political, social, and cultural progress of a nation, the Rector noted that it encompasses a wide range of factors, including economic growth, social equity, access to education and healthcare, infrastructure development, environmental sustainability, and the enhancement of governance systems.
Dr. Usman highlighted the Interconnection between Multidimensional Leadership and National Development to include, Holistic Approach, Collaboration and Partnerships, Innovative Solutions, Civic Engagement, Capacity Building and Resilience and Adaptability.
The Lead Paper Presenter, Dr. Baba David Danjuma described Leadership according to Susan Ward as the art of motivating a group of people to act towards achieving a common goal.
Dr. Danjuma who is the immediate past Rector of the Polytechnic, said a leader who inspires and mentors his subordinates to identify needed change, creates a vision to effect desired changes as well as executes them.
While noting that development can not take place without good leadership, Dr. Danjuma urged leaders at all levels to strive to bridge the gap between the rich and the poor, ensure high standard of living for all, promote peace and security, govern by example, promote rule of law and equality before the law, encourage inclusion in diversity, ensure education and health for all, regular power supply, good roads, promote trust, transparency and accountability among others.
Highlight of the program was the presentation of award of Meritorious Service to the immediate past Rector, Dr. Baba Danjuma David as well as award of Excellence to the Rector, Dr. Yahaya Baba Usman, Member Representing Idah Federal Constituency and Chairman, House Committee on Safety Standards and Regulations, Hon. David Idris Zacharias, Chairman of Idah Local Government, Hon. Alhaji Halilu Alfa and Chairman of Igalamela/Odolu Local Government, Barrister Cosmas Atabor and Member Representing Ankpa One State Constituency at the Kogi State House of Assembly, Hon. Akus Lawal.
Other award recipient are, the Director General, Kogi State Bureau of Land and Urban Development, Hon. Abdulmalik Teina, Award of Service to Humanity and Aminu Musa Audu, PhD, United Kingdom receiving the Intellectual Pathfinder Award.
