The DE Noble Club 10 in Kogi Central said it was deeply saddened by the news of the passing of the esteemed scholar, Professor Nuhu Omeiza Yaqub, former Vice Chancellor of the University of Abuja.
Professor Nuhu Omeiza Yaqub passed away on the 4th of January, 2025, at Niyamiye – Nile University Hospital after a brief illness, leaving the club in shock.
The immediate past President of the Club, Alh Abdulrazaq Onivehu Leramoh, expressed the suddenness of Professor Yaqub’s demise, noting that at its request, he had just delivered a lecture, titled: Salvaging Egbira Language and Values from Extinction: What Must be done at Afims Hotels, Okene last week.
The club extended heartfelt prayers for comfort and strength to Professor Yaqub’s family, friends, colleagues and well-wishers, acknowledging the magnitude of the loss not only to Ebiraland and Nigeria but to humanity at large.
According to a communication from Dr. Ozomata, Professor Yaqub’s funeral would take place at the Central Mosque, Abuja, at 2 p.m today as the club prayed for the gentle soul of the departed to find eternal peace.
Born on the 3rd of March, 1951, in Okene, Kogi State, Prof. Nuhu Yaqub had excelled academically, earning a First-Class Honours degree in Political Science from Bayero University (1977-80) and a Master’s degree in Comparative Politics of the Third World from the University of Toronto (1982-1983).
Noteworthy for his leadership roles in academia, Professor Yaqub had served as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja from June 2004 to May 2009, the pioneer Vice-Chancellor of Sokoto State University from 2012 to 2017, and the Dean of the School of Postgraduate Studies at Nile University of Nigeria, Abuja, from 2017 to 2019.
