The Nigerian Army Public Relations Officer, Brigadier General Sagir Musa on Sunday, 13th December 2020 disclosed in a statement that at least 26 Military Personnel have tested positive to the Coronavirus.
In his statement, a total of 417 personnel have been tested and 26 of them had result confirming their positive status. The test which was conducted after the death of Major General Irefin, who happened to be a victim of the deadly virus as a result of respiratory failure, was a step towards maintaining a healthy status of all military officials in the nation. The deceased was said to have attended the Chief of Army Staff’s Annual Conference before his sudden demise and this has prompted the development of a retest.
All personnel have been mandated to self isolate irrespective of their results while the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has recommended a Covid-19 treatment drug be issued to those who tested positive. Also all conferences have been cancelled for this year in a bid to curb the spread of the virus.
Meanwhile, all officers and soldiers currently serving at the Nigerian Army Headquarters are being tested and the Covid 19 protocols strictly enforced to ensure compliance and safety. The headquarters was also fumigated to reduce the pact of the virus lingering around the building.
