Buhari’s instruction to INEC means APC never won 2019 election – PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said that President Muhammadu Buhari’s instruction to INEC means APC never won 2019 election.
The party says that the consequences of the 2019 elections and the victories recorded by the All Progressives Congress (APC) will continue to stare Nigerians in the face.
The party said this in reaction to the recent directive by President Muhammadu Buhari to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that future elections must be free, fair and credible.
Buhari had recently met with Mahmood Yakubu, chairman of INEC, and said: “Those that you declare as winners must be candidates that the people have chosen. Democracy is about free will, and the will of the people must be allowed to prevail.”

The president also said he expected the police to ensure that elections in the country are violence-free.
But the PDP thinks the president’s statement is weighty and speaks about how the APC got its victory during the 2019 elections.
The opposition party also said the president’s comment has raised questions about the credibility of the 2019 presidency and other elections like the ones that took place in Kogi and Bayelsa.
It said even though it would continue to respect the Supreme Court’s verdict on the presidential election as a matter of obedience, “the fact remains that the violent manipulations of the 2019 elections in favour of the APC and its candidates will continue to stare our nation in the face.
“This is a weighty verdict by Mr President on the huge electoral fraud perpetrated in the 2019 elections by his party, APC.”
It said the president’s remark shows that, in their innermost conscience, beneficiaries of manipulated polls are always confronted with the truth.
The party, in a statement by Kola Ologbondiyan, its spokesperson, asked INEC and the police to come clean concerning the details of their meeting with the president adding that it is doubtful that they met Buhari about 28 days to coming run-offs and by-elections.
The party pleaded with the president to stay away from INEC, which it called an independent body while asking the commission to stop visiting the Presidential Villa for alleged instructions on elections.
The PDP maintained that the electoral act amendment bill of the eighth Nattional Assembly should be re-visited if the president is really committed to free, fair and credible electioneering.
“He should order the prosecution of security agents involved in the invasion of polling centers and shooting at voters in recent elections.
“He should also reciprocate the benevolence of Nigerians by recreating an electoral atmosphere like the one that brought him into office in 2015,” while urging the president to seek solutions to the Nigeria’s economic challenges.
The governor said President Buhari is the most democratic president he has ever come in contact with across Nigeria.
