The Kogi State Police Command has announced that it will commence the enforcement of the mandatory use of reflective jackets and identification cards by commercial motorcyclists across the state from July 1, 2026.

The directive, according to the Command, is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen security, improve the identification of commercial motorcycle operators, and enhance public safety across Kogi State.

In a statement issued on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, all commercial motorcyclists, popularly known as Okada riders, are required to wear reflective jackets bearing serial numbers and carry valid riders’ identification cards while carrying out their operations.

The statement explained that the reflective jackets will be colour-coded according to the three senatorial districts in the state. Riders in Kogi Central Senatorial District will wear yellow jackets, those in Kogi West Senatorial District will use blue jackets, while operators in Kogi East Senatorial District will wear red jackets.

The Commissioner of Police in Kogi State, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, directed Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers to ensure strict compliance with the directive while maintaining professionalism in the course of enforcement.

He also warned police officers against extortion, intimidation, or harassment of commercial motorcyclists, stressing that any officer found engaging in such misconduct would face appropriate disciplinary action.

The Command further disclosed that any motorcyclist found operating without the approved reflective jacket or valid identification card would be arrested, while the motorcycle involved would be impounded until the rider complies fully with the requirements.

The police advised members of the public to take note of the serial numbers and identification details on the reflective jackets of commercial motorcyclists they patronize, noting that such information could be useful for security purposes and future investigations when necessary.

The Kogi State Police Command urged all commercial motorcyclists and stakeholders to cooperate with the new measure, emphasizing that the initiative is designed to prevent criminals from exploiting motorcycles for unlawful activities and to improve security across the state.
