As political permutations gradually shape ahead of the 2027 general elections, one name that continues to resonate strongly across communities in Kogi West is Sunday Steve Karimi.
Widely regarded by supporters as a grassroots politician with a track record of impact, Senator Karimi is increasingly being positioned as the “people’s choice” for another term in office.
Since his emergence as Senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District in 2023 under the All Progressives Congress (APC), Karimi has maintained a visible presence both in legislative activities and constituency development.
Kogi West Senatorial District, known for its diverse political dynamics and seven local government areas, has historically demanded leaders who combine accessibility with performance qualities many constituents attribute to the senator.
Karimi’s political journey, which spans over a decade, began in the House of Representatives where he served from 2011 to 2019 before ascending to the Senate.
His experience in both chambers of the National Assembly has positioned him as a ranking lawmaker with deep institutional knowledge and legislative influence.
Supporters point to his achievements in infrastructure, security, and human capital development as evidence of purposeful leadership.
Among his notable interventions is the construction of a military base in Egbe, aimed at strengthening security and curbing criminal activities in border communities.
In addition, he has facilitated the installation of dozens of solar-powered boreholes and rehabilitated water schemes to improve access to clean water across the district.
In the area of education, Senator Karimi has initiated scholarship and bursary programmes valued at millions of naira to support students across Kogi West.
These interventions, alongside investments in digital learning infrastructure such as Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres, have been widely praised for expanding educational opportunities.
Infrastructure development has also remained a central focus of his agenda. From advocating for the reconstruction of critical road networks to undertaking temporary repairs on strategic routes, Karimi has demonstrated a commitment to improving connectivity and boosting economic activities in the region.
His emphasis on rural electrification through solar projects and support for local enterprises further underscores a broader development strategy aimed at reducing poverty and unemployment.
Beyond projects, political observers note that Karimi’s strength lies in his grassroots connection. Having risen from humble beginnings in Egbe, Yagba West Local Government Area, he is often described as a leader who understands the needs of ordinary people.
This connection has translated into strong support across wards and communities, reinforcing his image as a representative who is accessible and responsive.
As Chairman of the Senate Committee on Services, Karimi has also played a strategic role in ensuring effective legislative operations within the National Assembly. His leadership in this capacity has further elevated his profile at the national level.
With the 2027 elections on the horizon, political momentum appears to be building around his potential re-election bid. For many constituents, the narrative is simple: continuity of leadership, consolidation of ongoing projects, and sustained representation at the national stage.
While political contests remain unpredictable, especially in a competitive district like Kogi West, the growing endorsement of Senator Sunday Karimi as the “people’s choice” reflects a broader sentiment rooted in performance, accessibility, and experience.
As the race unfolds, all eyes will be on how this support translates into political reality but for now, Karimi’s standing among his supporters suggests that he remains a formidable figure in the journey toward 2027.
