A senior lecturer at Kogi State University, Anyigba, Dr. Olabode Abimbola Ibikunle, has died during an alleged sexual encounter with a 22-year-old female student of the institution, sparking shock and concern within the academic community.
The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday at a private hotel in Anyigba and was reported to the police by the hotel management shortly after it happened.
According to the Kogi State Police Command, the lecturer reportedly collapsed shortly after the encounter, prompting the student, identified as Gloria Samuel, a 200-level undergraduate, to raise an alarm and alert hotel staff.
The hotel manager, Moses Friday, immediately notified the police and assisted in rushing the lecturer to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival by attending medical personnel.
Sources within the university described Dr. Ibikunle as a well-known academic in the Department of Biological Sciences.
His sudden death has left colleagues and students in shock, with many expressing disbelief over the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Kogi State Police Command, SP William Ovye Aya, described the situation as unfortunate and said that investigations are ongoing.
“Yes, the matter was reported to us, and we have taken the necessary steps. An autopsy has already been conducted to determine the actual cause of death,” Aya said.
He also confirmed that Gloria Samuel had been taken into custody and transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Lokoja for further interrogation.
While the police await the autopsy results to clarify the cause of death, speculations have continued to swirl, raising questions about professional ethics, student-lecturer relationships, and the abuse of power in academic institutions.
