A final-year student of economics at the University of Abuja, Justina Adegoke, has narrated how she recently discovered she was given fake admission into the institution by fraudsters who posed as  admission officers to defraud prospective students.
According to Justinà, she was hijacked by the fraudster at one of the cyber cafes located within the university premises, when she came for JAMB Computer Based Test (CBT) centre to address her admission challenge.
She said that the fraudster asked her what she wanted to do and she told him that she wanted to create an email address to complete her admission process and the fraudster collected her phone and promised to assist.
“I didn’t know that he diverted the mail and password from my phone to his own phone and all information were then intercepted by him.
“He then called me first to ask me to send N1, 000 airtime to him before he would send the information while claiming to be a staff member of JAMB.
“The fraudster later asked for N2, 000 and then N3, 000 to release the mail and password and threatened to deal with me if I refused to cooperate.”
Adegoke said that she could not bear the threats and demands for money any longer and decided to go to JAMB Headquarters to complain and that was when the bubble burst and the fraudster was lured into à trap and arrested.
The owner of the cybercafé, Moses Peter, claimed that he was not aware of the act committed by David Ahmed, who is a student of Auchi Polytechnic.
Peter said that he employed boys at random to go out and look for customers but was not aware of their fraudulent activities.
Justina’s case brought to prominence complaints by several prospective students who fall prey to admission racketeering every year at the University of Abuja where fraudsters operate freely sometimes with the connivance of staff.
During the 2017/2018 academic year, the university lost millions of naira when fraudsters hacked into the accounts of the university and diverted payments made by students for admission into a fake account with the help of some workers who were later arrested and prosecuted.
All the suspects apprehended by JAMB for the latest fraud have been handed over to security agents for further investigations.
FCT police command confirmed the arrests and promised that the suspects will be charged to court at the conclusion of investigation into the matter.
