The Kogi Government has reaffirmed its commitment to train over 5, 000 school managers in both public and private schools in the state for effective delivery of quality education.
Mrs. Rosemary Osikoya, the Kogi Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, gave the flag-off ceremony of the 2nd batch of workshops for school managers in Lokoja, tagged: “Strengthening Public Schools Management For Quality Instruction and Learning”.
The three-day workshop was organised by Kogi State Government in collaboration with the National Institute (NTI), and other relevant partners.
Osikoya said that the workshops was meant to train school managers on curriculum delivery, effective quality assurance management and improved efficiency.
The commissioner said that over 700 head teachers, principals and heads of institutions, were trained from Feb. 6 to 8, in the first phase, while over 400 would be trained in this second phase of the workshops.
She thanked all the partners, management and staff of the ministry and its agencies for their commitment to transforming the sector.
She reiterated the commitment of state government, to building teachers’ capacity as part of measures taking to restoring quality education in the state.
”We want to ensure that learning is taking place in all our schools across the state.
”I want to thank His Excellency, Gov. Yahaya Bello, for making the provision for teacher’s capacity building in the 2019 budget. It is not because Kogi has money, but the determination of our governor to delivering quality education to our children.
”At the end of 2019, Kogi would have trained 100 per cent of all its teachers, except those who refused to be trained.
”Every individual has a responsibility for his or her development, you must have the minimum relevant skills to function well in your assigned position.
”You own it to train yourself because at the level you become an administrator, you have a responsibility to educate yourself to fit in to that position,” she said.
She added that the state government had carried out the ‘need assessment’, and at the concluding stage of recruiting more competent teachers majorly science, technical and vocational teachers.
She also emphasized on the need for school managers to keep proper records of their students and teachers’ nominal role, urging all both private and public schools in the state to upload their records on the ministry’s website latest by March 31, 2019.
Alhaji Mohammed Usman, the Registrar of NTI, who spoke on behalf of the Director-General of the institute, Prof. Garba Azare, urged the participants to take the training very seriously in ordet to get something tangible out of it.
He said that the training would also enhance participant’s knowledge in curriculum delivery, teaching methods and techniques, effective school management skills.
He, however, urged the participants to have attitudinal change towards learning in order to deliver effectively at the classrooms, saying teaching and learning style have changed dramatically over the years.
”I want to assure you that this training will be 80 per cent participation from participants and 20 per cent from facilitators; it is going to be a participatory one,” he said.
In her goodwill message, NABTEB Registrar, Prof. (Mrs) Ifeoma Ebanihe, congratulated the ministry for the actualization of the training workshops.
Represented by NABTEB State Coordinator, Mrs Pauline Ajibili, Ebanihe said the training would enhance the teachers’ capacity to go back and get the right thing done in Kogi education sector.
”If you train a good teacher, you are sure to have good students, because students are the products of the knowledge of teacher.
”So, this training is both beneficial to teachers and the students and even to the generation yet unborn.
”I want to encourage that this kind of training be organised time to time,” she said.
She assured the ministry of NABTEB continuous support in the areas of vocational and technical skills acquisition, saying NABTEB certificate guarantees self reliance and reduce unemployment.
